We're more than half way the 2026 now, and the British Distance Championships at Fife have finished; an event which attracted more that 60 participants. But there's still plenty coming up, starting with the Huntly Roller Ski Championship at (guess where) Huntly on Saturday 12th September. Details are below:
Please note that the CBNSC Cairngorm Hill Climb has had to be cancelled, because of wildfires in the area. See the explanation below.
After that, on Sunday 4th October at 12:30, it's the seventh race of the Southern Roll Series, which is the ability-handicapped 2 x 3 km classic relay. The organisers will make up teams of two, trying to pair one faster and one slower skier. For Southern Series points, though, points will be awarded on the basis of the fastest single lap.
CANCELLED – CBNSC Hill Climb – 13 September 2026
It is with great sadness that, following the recent wildfire in the Glenmore and Abernethy area, we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel this year’s Hill Climb.
During the emergency response, heavy plant and machinery, including metal-tracked bulldozers and large excavators, had to use the road to access the area and create fire breaks. This has resulted in significant damage to the road surface, making it unsafe to hold the event this year.
While skiers may be able to carefully pick their way through the damaged sections during training, a race environment presents additional risks. Skiers could be forced to ski close to, or potentially on, the wrong side of the road. Equally, as the road remains open to traffic, it would not be safe for skiers to suddenly have to alter their line to avoid damaged sections while being overtaken by vehicles.
We have explored a number of alternatives, including moving the start above the Sugar Bowl. Unfortunately, the practicalities of having a clear line of sight to the start, the lack of suitable parking, and the absence of a safe area for skiers to warm up have ruled this option out.
The Scottish Rollerski Committee is aware of the cancellation and, at the time of posting, is exploring whether a short-notice alternative event could be hosted on the same date at another location by a different club.
We are very disappointed to have to cancel the event, particularly after the disruption caused by the wildfire, but the safety of our competitors, volunteers and other road users has to come first.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported the event and our club, and we hope to see you all back on the road for the Hill Climb in 2027.
Please note that British Roller Ski Series has been suspended and replaced by two British Championship events: the distance championship at the Fife circuit in Scotland in July (which has takeen place and was verey successful), and the sprint championship at Redbridge, East London, in October. Specific race details and links to entry forms will appear on this page some time before the Redbridge event.
